Mr. Mejía is the Director of UNITAR’s Division for People and Social Inclusion since 2018, leading the ever-growing projects of the Nigeria Project Office, the Global Surgery Foundation, the CIFAL
Global Network, and the Social Development Programme Unit. As its Director, he has overseen CIFAL Global Network’s expansion to a total of 25 international training centres.
Mr. Mejía holds a master's degree in Foreign Affairs from Georgetown University in Washington DC, and an MBA from INCAE University in Costa Rica, as well as a Diploma in Political Leadership from Harvard University.

Mr. Mejía’s career spans over three decades. From 1992, he worked in corporate banking in Latin America, after which he joined his country's foreign service as a diplomat, serving as Counsellor at the Ecuadorian Embassy in Colombia. In 2001, he became Vice Minister of Economy for the Republic of Ecuador. During this period, he also served as Alternate Governor to the IMF, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Ecuador’s Central Bank. He was later appointed Director of the Inter-American Council’s Andean Program, an entity chartered by the Organization of American States. Upon joining the United Nations, Mr. Mejía served as Director of UNITAR’s Hiroshima Office and Director of UNITAR’s CIFAL Centre in Atlanta, USA.
Mr. Mejía is the recipient of the National Order of Merit of the Republic of Ecuador. Established on 8 October 1921, this is the highest decoration awarded by the country.
